I had just about every one of those requirements nailed, he said. So I filled out the application form and attached my resume. Two days later, I received an e-mail saying essentially, Thanks, but no thanks, he recalls. The letter said, After looking at your resume, your experience does not meet our needs. It kind of ticked me off, he said, laughing.So the SalesLadder member sent a letter back to the recruiter that read, After reviewing your needs, Ive determined my background is very much what you are looking for. He also create d a table that listed its requirements and across from that, his experience.For each of their 30 different requirements, I wrote my experience, he said. I fully expected them to say, This guy is a jerk, but I felt I had to stand up for myself. I welches qualified for this job. The next day, I got a request for an interview. And after I received a job offer, my new boss said that my letter proved to them how much I wanted the job.Breville said he had never done anything like that before but believes it was his experience in his previous position that gave him the confidence to push back.He had been working for a small French storage-management company as the North American sales manager. I was saying to people, Hey, weve got a product from a small French company that youve never heard of and not getting any interest, then trying again and eventually selling it. Once you do that, it gives you a lot of confidence in your ability to sell something. I had the confidence to push, and back up what I was pushing.Breville had been working at the companys Denver office for just a year when, this past fall, he suspected it was having financial difficulties. When the paycheck isnt in the bank when its supposed to be and expense reports are not paid on time, you see the writing on the wall. Two weeks after my paycheck wasnt there, I took some proactive steps to fix the situation.In late October 2008, he started looking for a new job. He found the job on Ladders the first night he looked at the listings, accepted an offer in November and started his job in December.Breville his wife and three children, ages two, four and 11, had moved to the Denver area just six months previous so he could work for his previous employer. Not wanting to uproot his family yet again, Breville made the decision to limit his search to the Denver area. A lot of the data-storage companies that I would look to for employment are headquartered here or have major offices here. Plus, we love Denver we love being close to the mountains. We wanted to stay in this area.He was totenstill working for his previous employer when he began his search. And while he was a bit nervous about the economy, after doing some research, I saw jobs that needed people with my qualifications, and that calmed my nerves.According to Breville, data storage is a safe field of employment. There is never a lack of need for storage, he said. No matter how bad things get, companies need to buy storage. Every company uses it - every time a store or restaurant rings you up, thats a transaction they need to back up. Every day, millions of transactions take place that have to be saved. Every company that does business is saving its data. I went into this area because I thought it was a high-tech growth market.Initially, Breville was looking for a position in either sales or marketing. And he saw several jobs in that area. But when he saw the listing for the analyst position at EMA, he saw a job where he could u se all his experience technical, customer relationship, management and sales.All that experience comes together in his new position, in which he looks at trends to predict where the market will go and what customers will be asking for. People are paying for your opinion, he said. Vendors of storage products contact them to hear me talk about their products and provide information that might help them produce or market it better. Im helping companies refine their messages, let them know if they are on target for what the market is asking for. I help them with research and development, so they can start coming up with new products and solutions.He also works with consumers who use his company as industry technology experts. Were not selling hardware or software were just helping them figure out the types of products they need.In the end, Breville said he is happy he made the change. His former company is still in business, but he feels better working for a bigger, more stable company. His previous company had a terrific product, it was sorely overlooked, and it got hard hit by the economy. The company is still around it restructured, and is now about one-quarter the size they were before I left. If I didnt have young kids - if they were older and had moved out - and if I didnt have a mortgage, I could have taken a risk with paychecks coming in late. But right now, Im at a time in my life where I couldnt do that.

A common choice workers in all levels of government face is whether to pursue anMPA degree or a CPM designation. Here are the major factors playing into this choice. Stage of Career Government workers late in their careers tend not to seek advanced degrees or certifications. They have so much experience that initials behind their name do not to give them a leg up in the government hiring process. Those early in their careers and in the middle of them, however, to pursue advanced degrees and certifications. Mid-career public servants gravitate toward the CPM certification. These people have enough experience to legitimately apply for senior positions but would look more attractive to hiring managers if they have an advanced degree or professional certification listed on the job application. All things equal, a certification could push one candidate over another and make the difference between getting an interview and getting removed from the hiring process. Younger workers tend to go for graduate degrees. These people are used to meeting requirements laid out by professors and are familiar with the bureaucratic processes universities put their customers through. Mid-career employees are sometimes intimidated by the prospect of going back to school. They havent taken formal classes for perhaps decades and do not know how they will assimilate themselves into a graduate program. Time Commitment MPA programs take about two years to complete on a full-time schedule or about three years on a part-time schedule. Some universities require MPA students to attend full-time and only offer classes during the day. Obviously, this does not work for the vast majority of government workers. This is why more and more universities have begun offering classes on evenings and weekends. This is more conducive to a part-time school schedule government workers need. Like MPA programs, CPM programs take two to three years to complete however, the time commitment within those few years is significantly less. Participants meet a day or two per month. Government organizations typically allow staff to use work time to attend such training because the content employees learn can be applied directly to their jobs. While applying material right away may seem like an ancillary benefit, it is really a primary benefit. Particip ants can show their managers immediately how the program is impacting their work performance and improving their management skills. Cost Some government organizations pay for employees to take courses within MPA and CPM programs. When government organizations reimburse college course such as those within MPA programs, some require employees to remain with the organization for a specified period of time. Otherwise, the employee must reimburse the organization for tuition paid. Employees must reisepass a course before an employer reimburses for it. If someone considering an MPA or CPM program will not be reimbursed by an employer, cost becomes a major consideration. MPA programs are much more expensive than CPM programs. Level of Prestige As noted earlier, MPA programs require a greater time commitment than CPM programs. Correspondingly, MPA programs also require a greater amount of effort. Because MPA programs require more effort than CPM programs, MPA degrees are more presti gious than CPM designations. This does not minimize the value of a CPM designation, but it does place a higher value on the MPA in the minds of hiring managers.

The answer is no. The Coast Guard has an Officer Candidate School, and an Academy, as do the other services, but no ROTC program. What they do have, some might think is a better deal than ROTC The Coast Guard College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative, or CSPI. Under this program, college sophomores can receive active duty pay at the rate of E-3, as well as a scholarship for their junior and senior year. Upon graduation, candidates attend the 17 week Coast Guard Officer Candidate School and are commissioned as an ensign. After commission, they must remain on active duty for at least three years. Sounds like a pretty good deal, right? Two years of college scholarship, two years of enlisted pay, and a commission, all in exchange for three years of active duty. How can you beat that? Well, there are a couple of catches, which well discuss in a bit. But first, a little bit about the program Program Overview The CSPI is a Coast Guard scholarship program for college sophomores (apply as a sophomore, started the program as a junior). The program provides a monthly salary, full tuition, some fees, and the cost of some books during the students junior and senior year. Members in the program must attend enlisted basic training, and participate in various Coast Guard training events throughout the duration of the program. During their junior year, CSPI students attend the Officer Indoctrination School at the Coast Guard Academy or receive on-the-job training at various Coast Guard operational units. Upon graduation, members are guaranteed the opportunity to attend Coast Guard OCS. If the applicant graduates from OCS he/she is commissioned as an ensign in the United States Coast Guardand is obligated to complete at least three years of active duty. Eligibility Re quirements Score 1000 on the SAT, 1100 on the SAT I, 23 on the ACT, or ASVAB GT of 109 or higherBe between 19 and 27 (applicants must have reached their 19th birthday, but notlage their 28th birthday as of 30 September of the fiscal year in which the panel convenes.)Must be a sophomore or junior (with at least 60 college credits completed toward your degree)Enrolled in a four-year degree program at an approved institution with a minimum 25% minority populationMust be able to complete a bachelors degree within 24 months after entry into the program Must not be a conscientious objectorMeet all physical requirements for a Coast Guard CommissionMaintain a GPA of 2.5 or betterMust be a U.S. CitizenMust be able to obtain a Secret security clearanceDependency - If single, may not have sole or primary custody of dependents.If married, may not have more than 2 dependents (your spouse is considered your dependent, regardless of military status).Financial - Must meet all financial obligations , and not have a debt to income ratio in excess of 30% ratio of debt to projected income at applicants accession level (i.e. at the E-3 level). College/University Applicants must be a sophomore or junior undergraduate student enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a bachelor degree program at an accredited college or university designated as Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU)Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSI)Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCU)The following colleges and universities located in Guam, Hawaii, and Alaska- University of Guam- The University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hilo, and West Oahu- Argosy University - Hawaii- Institute of American Indian and Alaska Native Culture Online Degrees Online degrees do not qualify f or CSPI - however, individuals attending an online institution may apply if they have acquired a four-year institutions acceptance to earn their undergraduate degree. Foreign Degrees Applicants possessing an associates degree conferred by a foreign school are required to include in their application a course-by-course assessment from an organization such as Education Credential Evaluators, in addition to the inclusion of the translation of their degree (if in a language other than English). Case-by-Case Consideration Coast Guard Recruiting Command may consider, on a case-by-case basis, schools not included in the above description that has had a minority student population averaging at least 50% of the total student enrollment for the past three years. In order to be approved, the applicant must be currently attending that school. Service Obligation. In order to enroll in the program, you must enlist as an E-3 in the Coast Guard with a four-year active dutyenlistment contract, and a four-year inactive reserves duty obligation. Like all anfangsbuchstabe accessions, your total military obligated service is a total of eight years. Whatever portion of that time is not spent on active duty is spent in the IRR (Individual Ready Reserves). For example, if you spend two years in the program, then three years as a commissioned officer on active duty, and elect to separate, you are then placed in the IRR for the next three years (total of eight years), and can berecalled to active dutyduring that time in the event of war or conflict. Enlistment. As mentioned in the paragraph above, you must first enlist on active duty in the Coast Guard as anE-3and attendCoast Guardenlisted basic training. If you fail to complete any portion of the program, fail to maintain a GPA of 2.5, or drop out of the program, the Coast Guard may (and probably will) reassign you as an active duty enlisted member to a Coast Guard operational unit for the remainder of yourenlistment contract. If you then fail to complete your enlistment obligation, you may be required to reimburse the Coast Guard for any expenses they have paid towards the cost of your college education, in accordance with United States Code,Title 10, Section 2005. Duty Requirements. While in the program, you must wear your Coast Guard uniform at least one day per week while attending college classes. You must maintain Coast Guard weight, fitness andgrooming standards. Additionally, you must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours, attend all scheduled classes and work a minimum of three hours per week for thelocal Coast Guard Recruiter(performing any and all duties he/she assigns you to do). UCMJ. CSPI students are military members on active duty. As such, they are subject to the provisions of theUniform Code of Military Justice(UCMJ). This means students are subject tocourt-martial,nonjudicial punishment, oradministrative sanctionsshould they commit amilitary offense. For example, while in the program, i f you decide to skip a class because you want to see the latest movie, or feel like sleeping in late, the CG could punish you for Failure to Go, which is a violation ofArticle 86of the UCMJ. If you decide to smoke a little week with your college buddies on the weekend, and the CG finds out about it, you could be punished for a violation ofArticle 112a. If you get a DUIor are caught drinkingunderage, or found to be drunk when you should be in class...well, you get the picture. In addition to such UCMJ punishments, you would also likely be removed from the program and required to perform your remaining active duty time as an enlisted member. Still interested?
